Different countries celebrate Mother's Day at different times throughout the year. Here, in the U.S.A., we celebrate on the 2nd Sunday in May. Mother's Day in England is celebrated on the 4th Sunday of Lent, this year it is today, March 2, 2008. In the 1600's it was known as "Mothering Sunday" and the poor who worked as servants and lived in the homes of the wealthy, would have the day off to spend with their mothers. They often took with them a special cake, called the "mothering cake" to provide a festive touch. I took the photo above of chalkboard sign in a roadside tea room on the way to Windsor. It advertises "cream tea" as a treat for Mum on Mother's Day. I would gladly have a cream tea on Mother's Day or any other day of the year!
