Welcome to Friendship Tea, a blog about the daily happenings in the life of Linda, a tea enthusiast, who enjoys travel and trip planning, and is passionate about family, friends, life in Kentucky, and all things TEA.
Iwao and Junko Miyawaki and their daughter Juri purchased The Old Bakery Tea Shoppe in Winchcombe in September, 2003. We know because we were there having cream tea when they came in to look around just before taking over from the previous owners. The tea room closed the next day and they began preparations to take over.
We were excited to learn, prior to our departure from home, that Juri's - The Olde Bakery Tea Shoppe was awarded the UK Tea Council's prestigious award for the Top Tea Place in 2008. We stopped in for lunch on Sunday, June 1. Lunch and the homemade cakes were delicious!
The Miyawaki's very kindly welcomed us for Afternoon Tea on Wednesday, June 4. They were closed to the public, but had a Japanese tour group and the 3 of us for a very special afternoon tea. The sun was shining, the weather was perfect and the view was fabulous as we sat in the garden for our private tea. It was an amazing tea experience and we will cherish the memory forever!
We've been to this tea room in Stow several times over the years. Every time the tables in the bay window have been taken. One of these days I will get to sit in that window! We had sandwiches for lunch here on Tuesday, June 3. GJ had Egg Mayo (an egg salad sandwich at home), I had Tuna Mayo on brown bread and AJ had 2 cheese Scones served warm with butter. For "dessert", GJ and I shared an order of 2 scones with clotted cream and jam. Yummy!
Note the sign indicating "coffee." I suppose we can thank Starbucks for the addition of coffees to the traditional English tearoom menu!
Most tearooms have a garden with additional seating in the back as shown in the photo above. This is also the way to the restroom, known as the "Toilet" or "WC."
When the world is all at odds And the mind is all at sea Then cease the useless tedium And brew a cup of tea. There is magic in its' fragrance, There is solace in its' taste; And then laden moments vanish Somehow into space. And the world becomes a lovely thing! There's beauty as you'll see; All because you briefly stopped To brew a cup of tea. ~ Source unknown
