We have given much thought (for several years) about adding to our house. We have looked at new houses, at lots, and farmland (even purchased 138 acres), and finally decided to add to our house because we love the location. We are located in the middle of town on a cul-de-sac street with 16 other houses. We are surrounded by woods and a nine hole golf course adjoining our back yard. The children can safely play in the street if they want. We have lived here for 20 years. It was not the perfect house when we bought it and won't be the perfect house when we complete this project. In my opinion, there is no such thing.
A local architect worked with us and drew up plans for adding rooms to either of the views of the house you see in the photos. We talked with builders, and finally selected two brothers who have been in the business for many years. They actually were laborers on this house when it was built in the mid-1970s. Again, we were going to add either to the back of the house in the bottom photo, or add to the side in the top photo. Decisions, decisions!!
As it turns out, the work began on both additions late last week. Trees and landscaping had to be removed. That was difficult for hubby, GJ, because he loves his trees and plants so much that I jokingly tell people he was a tree in an earlier life!
I won't have much quiet tea time at home due to all the noise and workmen, but I look forward to the addition of four new rooms to the house! And, I look forward to escaping the noise at afternoon tea time out and about!

So happy for you.

Good luck with the noise and dust. Just putting in a new floor in my kitchen made the whole house so dusty. I hope you find wonderful places to escape to for tea.
Oh keep us posted on this exciting project. I keep nagging about a garden room on the back of our house as it gets all the sun but I get no joy. My husband isn't a gardener so isn't at all bothered about looking out onto the garden. I would love it.
He just says more money, more decorating, more cleaning. Not that he would do any of the last two! I'll keep at it.
I am SO glad you are not moving and that you are adding on! Finally a bedroom for me (again:-)
How very exciting!
