Blowing Rock, North Carolina

After our quick visit in Roanoke, VA (less than 24 hours), we headed south onto the Blue Ridge Parkway in the late morning of Thursday We had driven on parts of the Parkway many years ago, but not in this area. We thoroughly enjoyed our drive through the mountains and the farmland, seeing various wildlife and the scenery was spectacular.

We arrived at Blowing Rock, North Carolina late in the early evening and checked into our hotel and enjoyed dinner at Pssghettis, AJ's choice for Italian food. Friday morning the fog and rain had settled in, but we ventured out to The Blowing Rock, anyway. A little rain and fog won't keep these boys inside!

Blowing Rock, NC is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains at an elevation of 4,000 feet. It is a popular resort area known for cool summertime temperatures.

The fog and rain cleared up in the afternoon and the weather was perfect for the rest of our stay.

Blowing Rock, NC has many quaint shops, places to stay, and great restaurants. It is near Grandfather Mountain, Linville Caverns, ski resorts and other attractions.

We celebrated GJ's Big 6-0 birthday with an absolutely fabulous dinner at the Best Cellar in the Inn At Ragged Gardens.
We walked back to the Meadowbrook Inn to see members of the local Carolina Shag Club gathering for a "Most Tacky Dressed" contest and dancing.

Folks were dressed in all sorts of tacky get-ups! (and they were proud of it!) This lady even had "TP" hanging out the back of her skirt! I peeked in on the dance to see the various outfits later, but didn't stay around long enough to see who won.

Here GJ is getting an explanation of how do do the Shag while AJ is having fun feeding the ducks. I hate to tell this nice man, but GJ just didn't get it!

There certainly was some beautiful scenery on your trip. That log cabin and gardens was so pretty. Great menu at Best Cellar - I would have had the P.E.I. mussels -yum.

I have never seen anyone dance the Calolina Shag and they sure did look tacky. Looks like a really fun trip and birthday celebration.

Oh, you went to an area I love! DH and I visited there for our anniversary two years ago. We went to Grandfather Mountain (he is related to the "Macraes" who are mentioned in accounts of the mountain's more recent history). And of course as a Jan Karon fan, I loved going to Blowing Rock and seeing where "Mitford" came to life. Lucky you! (I'm also a huge fan of the southern breakfast, so that menu was right up my alley!)

Thanks Angela!!
I forgot to mention the Jan Karon connection to Blowing Rock! They sometimes host a big Mitford festival there.
