We traveled from Charlotte, NC to Roanoke, VA, stopping in Mount Airy, NC to visit the home town of Andy Griffith.
AJ and
GJ love to watch re-runs of the Andy Griffith Show which took place in the fictitious town of
Mayberry, NC. Mount Airy has been turned into
Mayberry! Deputy Barney Fife was there (above photo) along with Floyd's Barbershop,
Opie's Candy Store, Snappy Lunch, Wally's Service Station, the
Mayberry Courthouse and more!

The boys bought
Mayberry tee-shirts and candy at
Opie's.

And, we visited the Andy Griffith Collection (museum) located at the Andy Griffith Playhouse. Our visit was too late in the day to take a vintage 1962 Squad Car tour of the town. But, we did walk down Main Street before continuing to the lovely Roanoke Valley.

We enjoyed a great dinner and stayed overnight at the beautiful historic Hotel Roanoke. While
GJ had another business meeting to attend on Thursday morning,
AJ and I enjoyed a fabulous buffet breakfast and watched the many trains passing by this old grand railroad hotel before departing to drive south on the Blue Ridge Parkway for our quiet family celebration of
GJ's big birthday.

what a fabulous trip. I need to go to Mayberry one of these days. Well, Mt. Airy in other words. It looks like fun. NICE hotel you got to stay at.
Mount Airy does look like a fun place to visit. The Roanoke hotel looks to be very grand. I love Tudor style and old buildings with marble, elegant chandeliers and antiques. Sounds like a very nice trip. I enjoyed seeing your photos.
My sister's family visited "Mayberry" a while back and also loved it. I so enjoy your travel reports!
How fun! I had no idea there was a Mayberry.
Glad you had a great time in Mount Airy! NC Come back and see us!!
I didn't know anything about this place! I love that show. I may have to plan our route to stop there if we ever go to the beach again!
