Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day is a day honoring American soldiers
who died serving the country in wars.

However, in the south, this holiday has long been known as
"Decoration Day,"
a time to decorate the graves of all family members.
I can recall many years of going with my parents to
decorate graves in the country cemetery.

Glenn and I decorated many of our family graves earlier this week,
both in town and in the country.
On Sunday, as I write this, the graves of all servicemen in
our local cemetery will have a small American Flag
on them, placed there by the American Legion Post, and many more will
have been "decorated" with flower arrangements.
Memorial Day weekend is a time for families from afar to come
back to their Old Kentucky Home.

I have to wonder if this long-standing tradition will continue
after my generation is gone.

I am wondering the same thing, Linda, about decoration day continuing many more years. Since I live so far from my parents, son and little brothers graves, my son goes every year (he lives fairly close) to put flowers on their graves in Alabama. It used to be such a huge honor and a day to look forward to seeing relatives and friends and enjoy the pretty flowers on the graves but it's dying out.

It is a wonderful tradition, and I hope it will continue.

I think decorating the graves is gone in my part of the world, but I do have fond memories of doing this with Jim's mother in Oklahoma. It was like a family gathering around the graves.

I do think some (especially in the South) will carry on this tradition. Here in Georgia, I know of a number of towns (including my own) where entire families decorate graves with flags, and I can't help thinking it's making an impression on the younger generation.
