Missing the Serenity of Afternoon Tea

Another busy family weekend.
Melissa, Tim and Peyton came for a quick visit on Friday with lunch at Boone Tavern.
More about in a later post ---
Friday night was the annual FBLA chili fund raiser at the football game.
My gluten free chili is in the red crock pot on the left below.
There was not a drop of it left after half-time. (nobody knew it was GF)
It was also senior night for the football team, cheerleaders and band.
I don't have photos from the half-time ceremonies,
since Glenn and I both escorted Austin onto the field.
I drove to Frankfort on Saturday morning for a DAR State Board Meeting

In the meantime, Austin had his senior photos made Saturday morning,
and later attended Glenn's company family outing with Kaitlyn.
Afterwards, they picked up Alexa in Somerset to stay overnight with us and all day Sunday.
Below: lunch at PF Chang's after church.
I love my family and all our fun activities, but I sure
do miss the time for the serenity of Afternoon Tea.
In the meantime, I'll sip on my cup of Harney's Queen Catherine Tea
as I sit at the computer, with just the cat and me at home.
Hmm... serenity is wherever you find it!

Celebrating Lynn's Birthday

Lynn's birthday was yesterday.
I won't tell how old she is, but she is the oldest of the four of us.
Left to Right: Patty, Mary, Linda (me), and Lynn.
We celebrated with a delicious lunch at Boone Tavern Hotel,
talked and laughed for several hours.
Michael, our server, brewed a pot of Boone Tavern Blend Tea for us
to enjoy while Lynn shared her pumpkin spice bread pudding
with Mary and Patty.
What a fun celebration of friendship!

Busy Homecoming Week

Austin didn't feel well during the play last weekend, and was
diagnosed with pneumonia after seeing the doctor late Monday.
What a busy week to be sick!
Above: Austin and Teresa Kidwell, both seniors at BCHS, were sponsored
by the Junior Class as candidates for the Homecoming King and Queen.
All candidates are seniors, but are sponsored by different classes.
Wednesday: Interview by three outside judges
Thursday: Morning -  interviews in front of the high school students
Afternoon - parade
Friday night:  Football game introduction and crowning
Saturday:  Dance
(and what a bummer, the ACT in the morning)

Austin and Teresa at the school assembly Thursday,
his first day at school after being diagnosed.
I was Austin's escort at the football game half-time crowning
We came home and out of the cold, damp night air,
immediately after Katie and Sam were crowned Queen and King.
All the kids in the senior class are the best of friends,
most of them have attended kindergarten through 12th grades together.
Alexa and Austin ready for the dance, Saturday night.
He bounced back after the pneumonia.

Time to Plan Christmas Afternoon Tea?

TeaTime Magazine arrived in my mailbox yesterday.
Yes, the November/December issue full of holiday afternoon tea recipes
and tablescape ideas arrived on October 12th.
Well, apparently not, because the stores are already selling Christmas
and holiday dishware, decorations and clothing.
Lenox Holly pattern china is 50 per cent off at Belk.
Enjoy this festive issue of TeaTime, while you sip a cup of
Holiday Tea (see page 17 for suggestions), and dream about your perfect
Christmas Afternoon Tea menu and tablescape.

Fall Break Week 2016

While Glenn and Austin continued college visits last week,
I drove to N. KY and attended Peyton's Thursday evening band concert
and Grandparent's Day on Friday at his school.

Kaitlyn rode back to Berea with me, because she spent fall break week
being pampered by her Aunt Melissa while Peyton was in school.
I think it was a "win-win" week for all.

Austin above, at Transylvania University in Lexington on Wednesday
and below, at Centre College in Danville on Friday.
Tuesday's visit was at Bellarmine University in Louisville,
and Thursday's at Asbury University in Wilmore.
He has decided (at least for now) to stay in Kentucky.
Eastern Kentucky University is also still on the list.
He has the schools ranked one through five.
He had a great week of visiting with the business and theater departments at all,
and observed a variety of classes.

The Historic Brown Hotel in Louisville, KY

Last Monday, during Austin's Fall Break Week,
we stayed overnight at The Brown Hotel,
a Louisville landmark since 1923,
"It is a blend of Old World elegance and modern day comfort."
It's our favorite downtown Louisville hotel.

We had dinner reservations in The English Grill

The chef's amuse-bouche, a bite of salmon salad
I ordered the Eggplant Canneloni appetizer
I shared the Tableside Caesar Salad with Austin

My entree was the amazing Cocoa Crusted Pork Chop with
Blueberry Coffee Sauce and Apple Butter. Oh my!

After dinner, we ordered the Red Grape and Mixed Berry Sorbets for dessert.
Tuesday morning breakfast was served in J. Graham's Cafe.
Austin had the Famous Kentucky Hot Brown, special-made for him
with brown Gluten Free Bread.
Below:  The Country Ham Breakfast with Cheese Grits and brown Gluten Free Bread.
Austin spent the day visiting Bellarmine University
while Glenn and I shopped and went to Annie May's Sweet Cafe,
the only dedicated Gluten Free bakery and cafe in Louisville.

The Great Saltpetre Cave

The Great Saltpetre Cave in Rockcastle County, KY
is a place I have known all my life.
Both my parents were born and raised in Rockcastle County.
The first family member in my mother's family settled on land very near the cave in 1795.
The family owned the "home place" until my grandmother sold it late in life.
The cave and property surrounding it, Great Saltpetre Preserve,
is currently owned by the Rockcastle Karst Conservancy (RKC).
This event was a fund raiser, "Dinner in the Mountain" with dinner and entertainment
inside the "Echo Auditorium of the Great Saltpetre Cave"
Melissa was only about three years old when we had a family reunion at the cave.

The RKC has made a lot of improvements to the cave including lighting,
cleaning out the main pathway, and an educational display
explaining that the cave was a significant source
of saltpeter for gunpowder during the War of 1812, and that in the 1930's
the Echo Chamber was used for a radio broadcast of live music for Renfro Valley.

This was Kaitlyn and Peyton's first visit to the cave.
After dinner entertainment was by the Johnson Sisters and the Penny Loafers.
In the photo below, they combined for the final two songs of the evening.
This is not a good photo, because a light was shining brightly on us,
but, in addition to our family, Mary and Lana joined us for this special event.
Making memories with the family!
